SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 are industry leading benchmarks for data security and privacy formulated by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) respectively.  To become certified, independent 3rd party organizations performs holistic audits on processes, policies and technology - covering areas such as security, privacy, risk management, availability and confidentiality.
